Modeling and simulation methods are essential elements in the design and operation of transportation systems. The course Mobility Research and Transport Modelling aims to develop an understanding of the urban transport planning process and the nature of travel demand and how to model it. The course is designed to appeal both German and International Students so it is held in English.

This course introduces the fundamental theories and applications of transport planning which includes the transportation network demand, simulation techniques and the transport measures. At first, this course provides an insight to the general tasks of transport planning in urban areas and data requirements and the survey techniques for gathering the required data. This section will be followed by Transport Models and their characteristics focusing on the classical four-step urban transport model. The four-step transportation model consists of methods and related analytical techniques to forecast and simulate the urban traffic. The first two steps are Trip Generation and Trip Distribution which discuss the techniques for estimating how many trips are generated in a traffic zone and where their destination is. The estimation of Origin-Destination of trips will be based on the structural data of the planning area such as number of inhabitants, workplaces, schools, etc. in each traffic Zone. The last two steps of transport Modelling are Mode Choice and Traffic Assignment which analyze the travel behavior of users in order to forecast their choice of the transport mode and the route of their trip in the transport system. Discrete choice models such as Logit and Probit Models will be employed for Mode choice estimation. Considering the travel time on a route, the trips will be allocated to the routes between an origin and destination by a particular mode. This course ends with the assessment of traffic measures in the urban transportation system. The effectiveness of soft measures will be evaluated within the topic of Mobility Management, whereas hard measures will be analysed within the topic of Traffic Management. This lecture will be accompanied with an exercise event in which students practice the four-step transport model and evaluate a traffic measure in transport system using VISUM software which is one of the most widely used traffic simulation software in the world.

Die Prüfungsform (schriftlich oder mündlich) hängt von der Teilnehmerzahl ab. Die Studierenden müssen außerdem aktiv an den Übungen teilnehmen, um zur Prüfung zugelassen zu werden.
