About us

Urban and regional development as well as transport infrastructure shapes our everyday life at a fundamental level. The layout of residential and industrial areas, the development and preservation of green belts and parks, and the planning and operation of transport facilities are the foundation not only for attractive living and site conditions, but also for personal and economic exchange. Above all, the structural layout of cities and regions determines traffic volume and therefore environmental consequences such as noise and exhaust gas emissions. Today’s central challenge is urban and regional adaption – to demographic change, to climate change, and to an economical, efficient use of resources such as space, energy, and financial means. To meet these challenges, the Institute of Urban and Transport Planning is working on interdisciplinary solutions for sustainable urban settlements, transport systems, and planning processes. This is based in scientifically sound empirical research on lifestyle habits, human behaviour, communication strategies, and stakeholder and governance structures which are necessary to implement new ideas and to convey these ideas to the public.
