Climate-protection concept “Climate-friendly mobility in Düren”
Background and aims of the project
In the last decades, goals for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions were set all over the world in order to counteract the effects of global warming. In Germany, the plan is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2020 as compared to 1990. To achieve this goal, energy and climate protection concepts must be created and realized at the regional level.
As the second-largest emitter, the transportation sector’s potential for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is particularly high, which is why the climate-protection concept of the city of Düren tackles this sector. The overall concepts focuses on promoting sustainable mobility, especially walking and cycling. The concept will show ways in which harmful emissions and other negative effects can be reduced by avoiding transport and particularly by switching from motorized private transport to walking, cycling, and public transport.
Contents and structure
The structure of the project follows the guidelines of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMBU) and is subdivided as follows:
- Energy and CO2-balance
- Potential analysis
- Stakeholder participation
- Catalogue of measures
- Controlling
- PR concept
In this context, the ISB is responsible for creating an energy and CO2-balance that is tailored to the city of Düren and adapted to the current data. The resulting initial balance and additional indicators will then be used for the potential analysis, which will show the potential of behavioural changes in the population for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the ISB will create a controlling concept that will make it easy for the city of Düren to monitor the progress regularly.
