Monitoring of climate impact and adaptation in NRW (KFAM NRW)

Initial situation

Global anthropogenic climate change is one of the most important challenges facing society today. In addition to a worldwide increase in average temperatures, the man-made changes in the global climate system include, among other things, more frequent weather extremes such as heat, storms or heavy rain. In North Rhine-Westphalia, too, meteorological data and observations in nature and the environment have already revealed changes in the climate and the resulting consequences.

Project goal

The Climate Impact and Adaptation Monitoring NRW (KFAM) aims to develop indicators for a monitoring system that can be used to show the effects of climate change in our environment, for us humans, in construction and planning and in the economy. In addition, the indicators should make it possible to develop, implement and evaluate adaptation measures.

Contents and structure of the project

This results in two elements for the Climate Impact and Adaptation Monitoring NRW (KFAM NRW) to be worked on within the framework of this project:

  • Climate impact monitoring: monitoring the impacts of climate change Impacts of climate change in our environment, for us humans, in construction and planning and the economy in Nordrhein-Westfalen.
  • Adaptation monitoring: Monitoring of adaptation activities in Nordrhein-Westfalen.

The results of the project "Climate Impacts and Adaptation Monitoring (KFAM)", carried out in recent years in cooperation by the Institute for Urban Planning and Urban Transport (ISB) of RWTH Aachen University and the State Office for the Environment, Nature and Consumer Protection (LANUV), were published in the NRW 2021 Climate Report on 15.12.2021 and are also available online.
