Researching the quality of life in urban quarters within the context of mobility, urban structures, and the energy transition
U-Turn uses an integrated approach to tackle the problems of cities in the 21st century. The project aims to develop a holistic concept of ethically responsible urban living guided by the needs of people and in consideration of social conditions. This will be achieved using a research design combines mobility, energy, and urban quarter development with questions of acceptance, communication, ethical contexts, environmental protection and health in an aging society.
For mobility, energy supply and urban quarter planning, the demands of people in urban areas are identified, analysed, and prepared conceptually for the implementation. Concerning mobility in future cities, multimodal citizens expect easy-to-use, interconnected mobility offers. Project U-Turn will first research the frame conditions of an integrated and highly connected “mobility association” including new kinds of mobility. The development of a concrete user typology linked to offers constitutes the groundwork for the development of implementation options, targeted applications and approaches. In addition, the development of energy supply in Germany and its influence on the Urban Turn will be researched using a holistic evaluation method which takes into account economic, environmental, and technological criteria as well as socio-economic factors. The aim is to develop possible future scenarios for urban areas in Germany and to systematically depict and analyse the parameters of the scenario, including their dependence on a number of influencing factors. Integrating information and communication technologies into future urban quarter planning is the most promising way to meet the challenges of demographic change and progressing urbanisation. The aim is to locate fields of application and to develop an action plan for architecture and living space planning in which intelligent and connected solutions make an improved, sustainable urban quarter planning possible that is acceptable for the inhabitants.
U-Turn is one of three programmes under the umbrella of Project House HumTec. HumTec promotes interdisciplinary top-level research between the humanities and social science and engineering and the natural sciences. HumTec is part of the Institutional Strategy of RWTH Aachen University, which is funded by the Excellence Initiative of the Federal Republic of Germany and the federal states.
