Fan Mobility at Bayer 04 Leverkusen

The new DFL sustainability guidelines call for an analysis and consideration of fan mobility. Against this background, Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH would like to analyze fan mobility when traveling to the BayArena. The results will provide starting points for optimizing the journey to the stadium for all fans, particularly with regard to a sustainable design of the route.


Project structure

Different survey and analysis methods are used to analyze fans' travel behavior. Spectator arrivals are counted on two match days in order to consider external influences such as the varying importance of the match, weather conditions and roadworks.


Work package 1: Counting spectator arrivals

The arrivals of fans at the stadium are counted considering their transport mode and time of arrival. Therefore, counts are carried out at the parking lot entrances with recording of car occupancy and the bicycle parking facilities as well as at the bus stops. Arrivals by train are roughly recorded at the surrounding train stations and checked for plausibility using data from the survey. The amount of foot traffic cannot be counted, but is calculated on the basis of a survey.

Work package 2: Analysis of mode choice

In order to gain a better understanding about the reasons for mode choice and personal transport alternatives, it is necessary to survey fans. The aim of the survey is to answer the following questions:

  • Which mode of transport is used?
  • What are the individual reasons for mode choice?
  • Are alternative means of transportation available/conceivable?
  • Does the mode choice for visiting the stadium differ from the mode choice in everyday life or not and what are the reasons for this?

The survey will be sent and conducted online. In addition, a smaller sample will be interviewed in person at the stadium. The small sample on site is primarily used to assess possible selective effects in the online survey.


Work package 3: On site conditions for different transport modes

In order to analyse the mode choice against the background of the transport-specific conditions, the situation for the various modes of transport is analyzed (parking situation and authorizations, public transport traffic, bicycle parking facilities and infrastructure in the surrounding area, etc.). In addition, a comparative analysis of accessibility for different modes of transport will be drawn up. For this purpose, the travel times for motorized private transport and public transport to reach the stadium are determined and presented in isochrones around the stadium.
