Campus Mobility

Status quo

The 47,500 students and over 10.000 employees of the RWTH Aachen University generate a substantial traffic volume in the city of Aachen. This consists of trips to the university and trips between different university campuses. In this project, RWTH Aachen University wants to improve the sustainability of this traffic, e. g., by shifting to eco-mobility modes.

Objective

The project analyses which measures could foster sustainable mobility of RWTH Aachen University employees, keeping in mind digitalization, the establishment of sharing services, and electric mobility.

Project content and structure

The project consists of different topics, including the collection of the current mobility framework and, subsequently, the development and implementation of measures.

Survey of employees and students of the RWTH Aachen University regarding their mobility behavior

The survey of mobility behavior focuses both on trips to the university and internal trips. Furthermore, the mobility behavior of the students will be collected along with the employees as it is not possible to separate certain aspects, e.g., the demand of both groups for shared bicycle parking.

In 2010, more than half of the employees said that they commuted to RWTH Aachen University by car, compared to just over one-third in the most recent survey. At the same time, the number of cyclists has almost tripled since 2010. It remains to be seen how much of this is due to the pandemic and how many people will switch back from cycling to public transport again in the medium term.

Charging infrastructure for electric motor vehicles

The ISB identifies potential sites for charging infrastructure for electric motor vehicles at the campus by combining two approaches. The first approach estimates the current demand based on the existing private and company-owned electric cars. In the second approach, the demand for charging infrastructure on the campus is forecasted using the prognosed electric mobility market.

Based on the demand, suitable locations for charging infrastructure on the campus are identified by considering the feasibility aspects, e.g., the power supply.

In addition, the ISB monitors the utilization of the implemented charging infrastructure in order to determine the need for further expansion.

Cycle parking

The ISB collects the existing count of cycle parking racks and analyses their occupancy rate. Furthermore, the ISB surveys the usage preferences of RWTH Aachen University employees and students regarding bicycle parking facilities and their willingness to walk or cycle to access them. With these results, the ISB creates a concept for expanding bicycle parking facilities. The concept focuses on charging infrastructure for e-bikes and on solutions for protecting expensive bicycles, e.g., bicycle parking garages.

Internal mobility

The ISB investigates how to improve of the supply of sharing services by identifying network gaps and analyzing the use of the RWTH Aachen University’s driving service and employee travel in general.

Analysis of car parking space occupancy at RWTH Aachen University

In order to further develop the parking supply according to demand, the ISB is investigating the utilization of the existing parking garages and parking spaces. The surveys took place in April and October 2022 to take into account the effects of the closure of the Turmstraßen Bridge from May 2022.
