Ridematching Datascape (RISE): Data-supported conception of public transport supplementary ridesharing services - an approach to improve the internal and external connectivity of the Rhenish lignite mining district

In the context of the structural transformation of the Rhenish lignite mining district, it is necessary to keep the area attractive to society and the economy. Therefore, fast and efficient connections within the district and the surrounding cities must be ensured. One possible sustainable solution is to match private car rides. Digitalization helps to revive this concept by offering ridesharing apps for the smartphone and providing digital mobility data. Data-driven approaches optimize the spatial and temporal demand so that the service is sustainable and viable.
The project “Ridematching Datascape” (RISE) aims to develop a platform including diverse data as a so-called datascape. The data is checked for availability, transferability, and relevance. Furthermore, based on the datascape, a methodology for the design of private ridesharing services procedure will be developed such that private ridematching companies can seamlessly open up new fields of business.
The project starts with the collection of various structural and mobility data. Next, calculations of accessibility by various transport modes enrich the datascape to estimate the spatiotemporal travel demand. Thereupon, an optimized conception of the ridesharing network takes place to determine the potential of ridesharing services to complement public transport. Lastly, the data used is evaluated regarding its relevance and compared with user data. Finally, the transferability of the concept to other regions or companies is examined.
The project team consists of the Institute of Urban and Transport Planning at RWTH Aachen University (network coordinator) and goFLUX mobility GmbH.
Furthermore, the City of Cologne, the City of Düren, the Rhein-Sieg Transport Association, and the Forschungszentrum Jülich support the project as associated partners.
