This course teaches the basics of urban traffic planning. The focus is on the design of urban road spaces and the control of traffic at intersections. The lecture is interlinked with integrated exercise modules in which the sub-areas "road space design" and "urban traffic engineering" are deepened. In the exercises, the students have to record and evaluate a street section and prepare their own street design. In addition, a signal programme is independently designed for a traffic light-controlled junction and the traffic quality of the junction is then determined and the dimensioning of a small roundabout is carried out.
Teaching Aims
Students acquire knowledge of the basics of the design and operation of urban road traffic facilities and their links, as well as the relevant guidelines and regulations. They are enabled to create smaller road space designs and learn the theory and procedures for dimensioning urban junctions.
Further information about th lecture, the exercise and the exam can be found in RWTHonline.
